Chapter 13

The next morning, Storm made her way over to her father’s house to find him and Billy out on the back patio enjoying their cups of coffee. Archie was thrilled to find two men he could bond with, and Billy obliged by throwing a stick multiple times out into the lawn while Storm settled herself into one of the lounge chairs, accepting the coffee her father offered her.

“So, how did it go last night?” she asked her father after thanking him and taking a sip of the hot liquid. The smell of fresh roasted coffee rose, and she wasn’t sure if she enjoyed the aroma or the taste better, but either way, she sighed appreciatively.

“Well, Billy’s a darned good card player. He left with his pockets heavier than when he entered the clubhouse.”

Storm raised an eyebrow and stared at her father, but he just grinned back at her.

“And how much did you lose?”

“Not enough to worry about, besides it’s all in fun.”

“Anyway, that’s not what I was talking about, and you know it. Did you learn anything about the murder?” Storm laughed at her father and gave him an unblinking stare as she waited for his answer.

“Everybody is shocked about the murder, regardless of who it was. But I have to admit, I don’t think very many people were all that upset that it happened to Brenton. He was more of an acquired taste, and I don’t think his absence from the country club set is going to be missed.”

“Really? I would’ve thought a man in his position would have been widely accepted at the club.”

“There’s a difference between being accepted and liked, and being tolerated.”

“Well, when you put it like that, I guess it makes sense. The few times I’ve seen him at community events, he came across as fake rather than sincere about the project we were working on.” Storm took another sip of her coffee and looked at her father expectantly. She knew the man well and could tell there was something he was holding back. Paul looked over to make sure Billy was occupied with the puppy before he sat down next to Storm and leaned over so their voices wouldn’t carry.

“There are rumors flying around the club that his company’s involved in some shady business deals. Nobody’s come right out and said what they were, but they were definitely more on the illegal side than what most of the club members like to be associated with. I don’t think there are too many members who want to have their name linked with the Millstone Company.”

Storm’s fingers tapped on the coffee cup as she thought about what her father had said. It was a small community that they lived in, but she hadn’t heard these rumors, and it took her by surprise. “Did anybody say what kind of activities? Are we talking white-collar crimes or more illicit hard-core crimes?” she asked.

Paul looked at his daughter and gave a nod of approval, pleased that she was following his line of thought.
